TOUR DESCRIPTION

Details

Come join us and learn about the city that grew up along the Ohio & Erie Canal. We will start our tour alongside the Ohio and Erie Canal and discuss the mills of Ferdinand Schumacher and Dr. Eliakim Crosby that helped develop what used to be Akron’s city center and the home of the world famous Quaker Oates.

We will wind our way by one of Akron’s favorite local restaurants that receive regular visits from celebrities and presidents alike. But Akron is much more than Quaker Oats and VIP dining. It is a city where Luis Armstrong used to play and where Sojourner Truth gave her famous “Ain’t I a Woman” speech at the Women’s rights convention of 1851. Runners will also pass by some current restaurant and night spots as well as the new Akron Art Museum and several buildings that are on the national register of historic places. Next up, are some of downtown Akron’s historic churches including the original St. Paul’s Episcopal where Harvey Firestone’s granddaughter married Henry Ford’s granddaughter in what many have called the biggest wedding in Akron history.

Passing by the Hower House, the 28 room Victorian Mansion built by Jacob Snyder in 1871 for the Akron industrialist John Hower we will see churches built by Snyder that feature the Akron Plan that was used widely in school and church construction across the country in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. We head down to the canal to enjoy some more scenic views and to enjoy a stunning view of the city skyline as we run to the historic Glendale Steps built by the Works Progress Administration during the Great Depression.

We finish our run by passing St. Vincent Catholic church and St. Vincent-St. Mary High School where Lebron James attended before becoming the best basketball player in the world. Whether you’re from Akron or visiting from out of town this tour will give a unique view of this great city and its history!

  • DO YOU CANCEL IF IT RAINS?
No we do not cancel our tours if it rains, storm etc. It is very rare that conditions are so bad, that we have to cancel, so if you are in doubt - expect to run.

    WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?
In Akron we have mild to cool temperatures in spring & fall, cold winters, and warm summers. It is always a good idea to check the weather conditions before travelling to Akron, so that you know what temperatures to expect.

During the colder months we always recommend people wear long sleeves and in winter layers of clothes and a hat and gloves, etc. as we have short stops along the run, in order to take photos and for the guide to talk about the attractions. In summer you can easily just wear a t-shirt and a pair of shorts/tights.

IS THERE WATER ON THE TOUR?
It is recommended that you bring your own water to the run and there are a few public water fountains along some of the tour routes, so if you are in need of a sip of water, simply ask the guide to point out a drinking spot.

HOW FAST DO YOU RUN ON THE TOURS, DO I HAVE TO BE AN ELITE RUNNER TO PARTICIPATE?
The running pace is set on our private tours by you. During our group tour we run a pace of about 6:00 min/km or 9:30 to 10:30 per mile.

IS IT POSSIBLE TO STORE BAGS AND CLOTHES AT THE PLACE WE START?
Your tour guide could store a small bag in their car. Please request upfront of the tour.

IS IT POSSIBLE TO TAKE PICTURES ALONG THE WAY?
Yes, you can bring your camera and snap away. The running guide will also take pictures along the route, and if there is a certain place you would like your picture taken, then simply ask your guide. The pictures will be sent to you after the tour by email.

DO YOU HAVE A HOTEL PICK-UP SERVICE?
We offer for our private tours an optional hotel pick-up service. The hotel or apartment building should be on or close to the tour route.

Please let us know your complete hotel or apartment address during the tour reservation process and we will check if we can meet you at your hotel/apartment or at the standard meeting point.
