SAN ANTONIO

San Antonio is a major city in south-central Texas and its history dates back to 1691. A group of Spanish explorers and missionaries came upon a river and Payaya settlement.  They named the place and river “San Antonio” in honour of St. Anthony of Padua due to finding the settlement on June 13 which so happens to be the feast day of St. Anthony.

San Antonio is a historic city that also found itself in a battle that you will forever know the phrase, “Remember the Alamo”. The Alamo is located in the heart of San Antonio and is the beacon of Texas liberty. The Alamo whose name was derived from a nearby group of Cottonwood trees, known in Spanish as alamos. The infamous mission landmarks the 1836 battle for Texan independence from Mexico. The Alamo is now a historic monument and museum that has over 1.6 million visitors every year and is the most visited destination in the state of Texas.

Once you have built up an appetite it’s time to dip down towards the San Antonio River Walk.  The River Walk is a historic pedestrian path lined with restaurants, cafes, and shops. Throughout the downtown area river walk you will hear the mariachi music and festive celebrations that will put anyone into a Fiesta mode. The air is enriched with the smells of iconic Tex-Mex restaurants, Texas barbecue, and any other variety of savoury cuisine all along the river bend. When you draw down towards the river visit the restaurants get a table up to the river and enjoy a refreshing margarita and other local specialties.

I may be biased, but I think that San Antonio is the best city in the great state of Texas. There is so much culture, history and fun that can be had here.
