We will start the Andros Bucket List Tour from the castle’s seaside remains at the end of Andros town, also referred to as Lower Castle (Kato Kastro), built by the Venetians in 1207, soon after they captured Andros. The castle eventually fell to the Ottomans in 1566. During this time, it housed a prosperous medieval community.
From the Lower to Upper Castle
From the Lower Castle, we will follow the ancient stone pathway connecting it to the Castle of Faneromeni (or Upper Castle) at an altitude of 780 meters, passing through the valley of Dipotamata and the remains of ancient watermills. As the only way of communication between the two castles, this excellent pathway is in itself a sight to admire, with wonderful handcrafted single flagstones paving the way. The view from the top of the castle remains is breathtaking. On a clear day, you can see half of the Aegean Sea, up to Chios and Ikaria islands. The Lower Castle, our starting point, is also visible from there.
Through the Villages
Our route from there will be downhill towards the picturesque seaside village of Korthi. There, we will refuel before ascending towards the 11th-century Byzantine monastery of Panachrantos and passing through the rugged mountain villages along the way. As we go through the villages dotting the mountain sides we will be able to refill with water and admire the traditional architecture, especially at the beautiful village of Lamira, as we prepare ourselves for the final approach towards our starting point.
This bucket-list tour is a 26km trail run with 1200m of elevation – so it can be challenging. It is advisable to start this tour no later than 07:30 in the morning during the summer months.
This is a private tour, so you will choose the pace that suits you, especially during the route’s uphill parts. So it might get a bit slower than usual. Please carry some water with you, especially in the summer months, as it can get scorching. A hydration vest or similar running equipment is strongly advised.
