Description
This tour is designed to show the importance of water, the most valuable resource on a Greek island. We start our hike by the beach next to the Andros town. We follow the footpaths by the water streams through the villages of Stenies and Apoikia, home the famous Sariza water source. We’ll enjoy drinking the cold water, fresh from the spring, and then head towards the Pythara waterfall. Here, you will soon forget any pre-conception of dry Greek islands. As we return to Andros town, we’ll enjoy breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea, and even other nearby islands as we approach our seaside starting point.
As we twist and turn around the paths and trails through the villages throughout this route, you will get a good idea of traditional island life. You will learn how people’s needs, combined with the natural elements, shaped its environment.
Our total ascent on this route will be around 350 meters. So we will adjust the pace as necessary. Please bring proper hiking or trail running shoes and water as the weather can get hot, especially during summer. We’ll walk past some natural springs on the way, so refilling will not be an issue. You can always top up your walk with a cool swim at the beach where our tour ends. As an option, we can visit the beautiful seaside chapel of the Virgin Mary of the Sea (Thalassini) and call it a day to remember.
