Description
This 8k run will take you through downtown Bogotá and its surrounding areas, including La Candelaria. It is the colonial centre and El Centro Internacional, the neighbourhood that represents the beginning of modernity for Bogotá.
We will start our tour just outside the city centre, in front of the Planetarium of Bogotá, where we will take 7th avenue and start running southwards towards La Candelaria. The 7th avenue is one of Bogota’s first major roads and continues to be one of its main arteries. Vehicle traffic constitutes the majority of the road. But the portion in the downtown area was converted into a pedestrian avenue. Here, we can visit some of the main colonial churches, theatres, museums and plazas. It takes us further to Bolivar Square: the government centre of Colombia.
From here, we will move towards the mountain and enter the colonial Candelaria, where we will explore Spanish architecture and street art. We will pass by El Chorro de Quevedo, considered one of the possible foundation points of Bogotá. And from here, we will continue north towards La Perseverancia.
La Perseverancia is a neighbourhood slightly north from the downtown where we can find a lush gastronomical area, a marketplace and some graffiti art. We will continue north from here to the National Park and start our way down, back to the 7th avenue and El Centro Internacional and National Museum. Meanwhile, you’ll learn about the city’s modernisation, and we’ll finish the tour right where we started: in front of the Planetarium of Bogotá.
This run is primarily flat, although it will have some inclined slopes close to La Candelaria and when coming down from the National Park. Also, remember Bogotá is at 2,600m above sea level (nearly 8,500ft). It means the air is thinner, and you can feel the lack of oxygen, especially during sporting activities. Please make sure to have a quick meal before the tour and be hydrated.

Santiago was a great guide. Starting the tour at 6am was a great way to see downtown without it being crowded.

Santiago was a fantastic guide! Not only did I thoroughly enjoy the route, Santiago was also great company and I really enjoyed chatting to him. The 8K run should be sufficiently challenging for anyone who’s had a bit of time to acclimatise to the altitude. Santiago can run at any pace, and was always conscious of how I was feeling during the run. From booking, pre-run communication, and the run itself, I can’t fault the experience. I would highly recommend this to anyone visiting Bogotá, you won’t regret it!

I had an absolute blast with Santiago and the 5.2m run was just the right amount of flats + climbs as we wound our way through downtown Bogota and a number of historical areas including La Candelaria. Santiago was very prompt in picking me up at the hotel. navigating us to the start of our run and is not only extremely fluent in English but well read. I felt completely safe and he was also very accommodating during the run if I need anything or wanted to take a quick break for photos, water, etc. I would highly recommend him again and to any level of runner (I regularly run marathons and half marathons) but we took a nice leisurely pace given the altitude in Bogota which is 8,500 feet (I arrived the prior day).

This was a great way to start the day – with two of my favorite things, traveling and running! Santiago was awesome from the moment we booked – very communicative and accommodating. On the day of, he picked us up and took us to the starting point. From there, he took us on a fascinating tour of the city. He customized the run to our fitness level (not fully acclimated to the elevation) which was good – we felt challenged with the exercise in a good way. And he explained so much – we learned a lot of the history of Colombia, the culture in Bogota – and of course we saw awesome sights. All while getting our exercise in! This was a super fun tour – can’t wait to do it again when we return to Bogota!
