Description
Wow, you really want to see all that both East and West Berlins have to offer? Well this is the tour for you!
Beginning in the old city in East Berlin, you will be amazed by the architecture of this old yet modern city. Berlins glory days really began in the 18th century and this is reflected in the baroque style buildings dotted around the historic core. The most famous of course is the Brandenburg Gate, but Berlin also is home to UNESCO world heritage Museum Island which must be seen to be believed! This period was also famous for the age of enlightenment where tolerance, religious freedom, artistic expression and scientific endeavor were all promoted and encouraged. Two centres of enlightenment evolved, Bebelplatz and Gendarmenmarkt. Both squares are amazingly beautiful and I will discuss how and why both are centres of enlightenment.
The 20th century was a turbulent time in Berlin’s history. Berlins old city experienced the horrors of war from 1939 to 1945 and division during the Cold War. Of course, we will pass these historically important sights, the most important being the Jewish memorial, Hitlers Bunker, centre of the German government- the Reichstag, Checkpoint Charlie, the Palace of Tears and many more. In addition to seeing the sights you will hear the stories behind these sights too and how Berlin and its people are today dealing with this difficult period of history.
When we cross to West Berlin, we run to City West/KuDamm where Berlins wealthy like to stroll, shop and enjoy the finer things in life. This part of the city experienced its golden era in the roaring 1920’s. KuDamm during this period was an intoxicating mix of the wealthy, artists, WWI veterans, ‘ladies of the night’ and a growing LGBT scene. Let us tell you about of some of these people who called Kudamm home. West Berlin is also home to some wonderful districts(Kiez). Our route will take you through some of these quiet neighbourhoods passing the Funkturm Tower. Funkturm which looks like a small Eiffel Tower will certainly give you a feel that you got lost and ended up in Paris!
No tour is complete without a little bit of nature! The route taken will pass through the famous park in Berlin – Tiergarten where we will see the Victory monument and Bismarck memorial. The Majestic Charlottenburg Palace and its grounds is a sight to behold and the perfect place for some easy trail running. Passing Bellevue Palace we then enjoy a relaxing stretch along the River Spree. The nature is a perfect contrast and compliment to the bustle of Berlin!
Our tour will begin at the most famous landmarks, the Brandenburg Gate and we will finish the tour here as well. After we have finished you will (hopefully 😊) have been blown away by the sights and stories that you have just experienced along with the endorphins gained from doing the best exercise possible – Running!
