DAY 1 | ARRIVAL
Arrive at JKIA Nairobi and transfer to Panafric Hotel, Nairobi. There’s time for an optional park run today.
DAY 2 | NAIROBI: SHELDRICK ORPHANAGE AND NGONG HILLS
Enjoy a filling breakfast because today you will be visiting the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage. There will be a trail run at Ngong Hills (10-15 km). Later, we will explore the Karen Blixen Museum, meet and greet giraffes, and visit a Children’s orphanage in the area. Dinner will be served at the Panafric Hotel.
DAY 3 | NAIROBI – MT. KENYA REGION
Today, we will travel to Bantu Lodge in the Mt. Kenya region. There will be trail running to Mau Mau Caves in Mt. Kenya Forest. Dinner and night will be spent at Serena Sweetwaters Tented Camp.
DAY 4 | MT. KENYA REGION – JUDMAIER / OLD MOSES CAMP, 3300M
In the early morning, we will go on a game drive at Sweetwaters. Afterward, we will drive to Sirimon Gate (about 2 hours). From here, we will hike 3-4 hours (9km/860+) to Judmaier Camp/Old Moses Camp.
DAY 5 | JUDMAIER – SHIPTON’S CAMP, 4200M
Get fuelled up on breakfast because today we will embark on a 7 hours hike (14 km) to Shipton’s Camp.
DAY 6 | SHIPTON CAMP ACCLIMATISATION DAY, 4200M
For better acclimatization, we will stay an additional day at Shipton’s Camp. There will be time for a day hike to Oblong and Hausberg tarns (lakes) at 4590m then descent into the upper Hausberg valley.
DAY 7 | SHIPTON CAMP – POINT LENANA – MERU BANDAS, 2900M
Starting with a light breakfast, because we’ll be up for an early 2:00 AM start for an attempt to reach point Lenana in 4 hours (7 km). Descend to Minto’s Camp for a full breakfast and after a short rest descend further to Mt Kenya Bandas along the Gorges valley to enjoy the stunning views. Tonight will be spent at Mt Kenya Meru Bandas, where you can enjoy a beer, a fireplace, hot showers, and a bed.
DAY 8 | MERU BANDAS – ABERDARE
Load up on breakfast and get ready to a descent of about 3 hours (9 km) on a board track through bamboo and virgin rain forest to meet the vehicle for transfer to Chogoria town. The evening will be at the Ark, Aberdare National Park.
DAY 9 | ABERDARE – SOPA LODGE
Today will consist of a trail run in Nyeri Aberdare area. You will travel to Lake Nakuru National Park. Afterward, there is time for a game drive en route to Lake Nakuru. Tonight we will rest up at the Sopa Lodge.
DAY 10 | SOPA LODGE: TRAIL RUN AND BOAT TRIP
We will start the morning with a game drive. Later, a trail run at Nyahururu High Altitude Training Center and home of Samuel Kamau, the late Olympic, Chicago, New York, and World Marathon Majors, as well as John Ngugi, 5 times World Cross Country Champion. We’ll have lunch by Lake Naivasha. Then it’s time for a boat ride with the opportunity for birdwatching and hippo viewing.
DAY 11 | SOPA LODGE – MASAI MARA
After breakfast, we will leave for Masai Mara. We will run in the plains before arriving at the Masai Mara main gate. Here we will have time for another game drive, and later enjoy dinner and sleep at Ashnil Tented Camp.
DAY 12 | MASAI MARA: GAME DRIVE
Today will be a full day of game drive, so be ready (with your camera) to shoot the Big Five. We will stay at the Ashnil Tented Camp for another night.
DAY 13 | MASAI MARA – NAIROBI
Today, we will fly back to Nairobi, where there will be time for leisure and shopping. Dinner and the last night will be spent at the Hilton Airport Hotel.
DAY 14 | DEPARTURE
Enjoy your final breakfast as it is time to say goodbye.
What Level of Running is this Trip Suitable for?
Being a runner is not necessary for this trip, just as long as you’re an adventurer! When trail running in Kenya, some runs will be slow moving, power hiking, steep, and technical so prepare accordingly. All runs will be measured in time rather than distance due to the altitude, vertical +/- and technical aspects of the trails.
