Runner on the ground - SIMON

10 years of running

Early morning is perfect timing to run the streets in this part of town, sandwiched between the party-going of the night before and the growing crowds during the day.  The tour will be out-and-back, with either your hotel in the Downtown area or another agreed spot being the start / finish point.

Our tour will visit the world-famous Fremont Street, definitely one of the most rowdy and colourful parts of town…..and that’s only partly due to the world’s largest LCD screen which canopies all the partying happening below!  Old-time casinos are still there, such as the Golden Nugget, Four Queens and Binions.  Vegas Vic, the famous neon cowboy, is still encouraging us to enter the Pioneer.

From the entrance to the Fremont Street Experience we will run past a row of excellent, quirky places to eat and drink.  Just a little beyond them is the Container Park shopping mall, where you can find some unusual souvenirs, and also more bars and restaurants off the beaten track.  This is where we are entering the Downtown Project, a district that has been revitalised and re-energised to promote tech, arts, culture and innovation.

Next we head to the Arts District, another fast-changing and developing area that has emerged from more run-down times.  The arts and colours change year-by-year.  These include the murals, although the ‘Greetings from Las Vegas’ postcard mural is a permanent fixture and a great photo spot.  The Stratosphere tower, the tallest building in Las Vegas, will loom above us as we head further along the Arts District.  At the turning point back towards Downtown we can greet the two giant showgirls who are shaking it all for us!

The route is completely flat and is always on paved sidewalk, so it’s an easy way to explore old Las Vegas.  We are sure that you will see enough in this tour to inspire you to go back later in the day, maybe for some shopping or to check out a funky bar or restaurant.  Or maybe it’s the Fremont Street Experience that will call you back, with it’s live music, street performers and exuberance.  Whatever the case, you will see for yourself that Las Vegas is a diverse and fast-changing town, and that there is much more than the casinos on the Strip.

This was a wonderful way to see Las Vegas. We went to parts of town I would never see on my own and I came away with a real appreciation for the city. Simon is a great guide–he let me set the pace and made sure we didn’t miss a photo opportunity. I’d definitely book this again!

This was my first time doing a running tour and I highly recommend it. The time and distance flew by and Simon was a great tour. I talked about it all day!
