MUNICH ESPRESSO CITY TOUR – 5K

This tour is great if you want to see the major sights in a short time while, of course, getting a good workout. Our route will pass famous landmarks including Marienplatz, the Viktualien Markt, Odeonsplatz, and the Frauenkirche. We’ll even manage to squeeze in some local tips and hidden curiosities. Our start and finish point will be Sendlinger Tor. In our humble opinion, this scenic espresso shot is better enjoyed early in the morning when you can see and run freely through places that are normally crowded.

Runner on the ground - DIDIER

10 years of running

Munich Espresso City tour is a mixture of historical buildings, art, and green spaces. Running this route early in the morning helps you discovering the beautiful city of Munich before the business is opening, and while the streets are quiet before the tourists wake up and the locals start heading into work. This tour is for runners who want to discover a city differently, it is also for business people who are in Munich for a meeting or a conference and want to see the highlights of the Munich city with an experienced local runner before work. We enter the city center through the medieval Sendlinger Tor gate.

Our route will lead us towards the Viktualien Markt, the city center food market, before bringing us to Marienplatz which is the heart of Munich. Here, we’ll take a brief stop to admire the 14th Century Old Town Hall (Das Alte Rathaus) and the New Townhall (Das Neue Rathaus), built-in 1905 and known for the Glockenspiel whose figures act out stories from Munich’s history twice a day. The espresso doesn’t forget why Munich is famous: its beer! We will show you what may be the most famous pub in the world: the Hofbräu Haus.

Our Munich Espresso City tour will continue with the Maximilian Platz where the Opera house the Residenz (the former city palace of the rulers of Bavaria) is located. Entering this magnificent palace, our tour will reveal to you some unknown city gems, from there we will briefly visit the famous park in the city center: the Englischer Garten before heading back to Odeonsplatz and learning about some of the darker periods in Munich’s history. From Odeonsplatz we will head back towards Marienplatz via the Theatinerstraße with its beautiful baroque church. Our journey will bring us to the 15th-century Frauenkirche (the Church of our lady), another iconic symbol of the city before we cross the main shopping street of Munich, the Kaufinger Strasse.

On the Kaufingerstrasse, we’ll pass by the church of St. Michael Church, where Ludwig II, the last king of Bavaria is buried. At the end of the street is Karlstor we’ll pass through another City gate which dates back to the 18th century to reach Karlsplatz. Locals still affectionately call this square “Stachus” after a pub that used to be located here until the 18th century. This is a popular meeting place in Munich especially in the summer when you’ll find locals cooling-off in the fountain and in December when an open-air ice rink is also to be found here.

Heading back to our starting point the last sight of our tour is the St. Anna Damenstiftskirche, which is a unique church as the decoration was reconstructed after WWII according to black & white pictures, and so is literally in black & white. This Munich running tour is called espresso but do not worry it is for every runner and every pace, you can take as many pictures as you want along the way which early in the morning will be definitely a plus for you as there won’t be a random stranger in the background. As a first timer in Munich, it was a great way to explore the city with my son and couple of friends. Joshepine was nice enough to pick us up from our hotel. She was very knowledgable and informative about the city. She took few nice pictures and a short video and shared with us. I totally recommend this tour to anyone who likes to run and visiting Munich for the first time !

I had a wonderful morning 5k city tour with Jo while I was in town for a few days. The entire process from booking through communications after the tour was seamless. Jo was very communicative on I felt comfortable finding our meeting point on the morning of the tour. The pace was set to suit my needs, and the tour worked around other plans I had in Munich so that I was seeing new things! I learned a lot about Munich and enjoyed a great run. Jo also sent me photos, a great video and a long list of Munich recommendations after the tour. I can’t recommend this enough!

Didier was a very good Guide. He created a nice relaxed atmosphere and through the tour I learnt a lot of interesting things about Munich and got some good tips for bars and Restaurants to try out. He was great about just cruising or picking up the running pace, whatever you wanted. I really great experience. I would highly recommend it.
