Description
Starting from the iconic church of Santo Domingo we will slowly warm up, running alongside the old Aqueduct which had provided water from the surrounding mountains to the city for just under 200 years.
We will then reach the traditional neighborhood of Xochimilco, one of the oldest in the city, where the traditions surrounding Day of the Dead are still alive and well (no pun intended).
With our legs warmed up, we can start climbing, slowly but surely, to the Auditorio Guelaguetza. This open-air theatre is sure to intrigue you. After explaining the use and history of this unusual “UFO” like construction, we will continue down through the narrow streets of a popular neighborhood to reach the old train station, which has been well restored on one half, while looking like something out of a Zombie Apocalypse on the other!
If we escape the zombies (no casualties yet), we will continue for a stretch, that will lead us back towards downtown.
We will enjoy the freshness and luxury inside the impressive Basilic de la Soledad, under the protective sight of the Virgen de la Soledad surrounded by pure gold.
Crossing downtown, it will be a good time to show off some restaurants and bars, until we will arrive at the Zocalo (Main square) and thereafter the main market.
Once in the market, with its dizzying amount of colors and smells, we will make our way to the best place to enjoy a Tejate, refreshing traditional beverage made from cocoa seeds and flowers. We will accompany our beverage with some local cheese, peanuts and the typical Chapulines (fried GRASSHOPPERS!) the bravest of you might try a bit of mezcal too.
Once well hydrated, we will continue to the huge food market and its famous Paseo de la Carne, smoky pathway where meat is barbecued, while exiting this food paradise we will have no other choice than to stop by a typical chocolate factory, and of course try some of this present from the gods.
Don’t forget we are here to run, so let me lead you across the most crowded streets of the city, trust me, that’s an adventure in itself!
Getting away from the bustle of the city, we will pass by eye-catching churches and buildings while heading towards Jalatlaco, the nicest neighborhood of the city with its paved streets lined by colorful houses and numerous murals. I won’t miss the chance to show you one of the most popular locations for Oaxacan runners, the stadium Venustiano Carranza and its elevated running track.
It will be time to come back towards downtown, enjoying the peacefulness of the church of Jalatlaco followed by the lush parks of El Llano and Conzatti and finally reach back your accommodations, where we will end the tour.
