Description
This 21km trail run is an absolute must if you love trail running. And it is great for both beginners and experienced runners. This run is relatively easy but high on thrills and stunning views.
Since trail running became more popular in Cyprus, quite a few races take place on these trails, and also on weekends, many local runners are here to train as well as hikers.
These are beautiful and well-maintained trails around the peak of the Troodos mountain range named “Chionistra”. Troodos’ highest point sits at 1,950 meters above sea level. We will stay on an elevation ranging between 1,700 to 1,850 meters during this run. So you don’t have to worry about it as you go around the mountain on top of Cyprus!
Artemis and Atalante Trails
Enjoy the views and the greenery, the fresh air and the blue skies. We will go on two nature trails, Artemis and Atalante and both are part of the Troodos National Forest Park’s network of trails. You get to run by diverse flora, including black pines, golden oak trees, and juniper trees, with some of these of ancient age and admired for their shape and formation. An 800-year old Foetid Juniper stands tall and proud along with 500-year-old black pine trees.
Troodos is considered the green heart of Cyprus. It is not only a fantastic escape from the summer heat during July and August, but amazingly so turns into a snow-covered ski lovers destination in January and February – sometimes even earlier.
To the Ruins
In this unique geological environment, we will also pass by “The teishia tis Palaias choras”, ruins of makeshift fortifications built in the last years of the Venetian occupation (1571 AD) and by the entrance of an old chrome mine. On a lucky bright day – and most of them are, you will likely encounter a group of wild moufflons. Moufflons are a strictly protected and unique species to Cyprus. They are beautiful to watch from afar as they are pretty shy, but also very fast when they run.
This tour starts and ends at the parking area after the Cyprus Ski Club. It is just a few minutes from the main square of Troodos, where you can have a drink, buy some traditional delicacies or even spend the night at one of the hotels. Combine a visit to the Botanical gardens, the Geopark of Troodos, or have a traditional lunch at one of the region’s picturesque villages.
