As you consider a sunny San Diego run through Balboa, you must first put aside any notion of a typical city park. Fittingly named after the Spanish Voyager who discovered the Pacific Ocean, this National Historic Landmark is a place for explorers of all types.
Balboa Park is hailed as a place where history is majestic, beauty blooms, curiosity is cultivated, cultures come to celebrate and where art, science and nature collide. Our sight running tour is a true escape from the city, while still being right in the heart of it.
Your trip to San Diego isn’t really complete without visiting Balboa Park, and there’s no better way to discover it than to Go! Running.
Entertaining 5 km runs have become incredibly popular worldwide, and San Diego has played a major role in the origin and growth of these unique family friendly races. The combination of the active, charitable and fun nature of San Diegans paired with the perennial perfect Southern California weather has made “Let’s do that 5k” a regular part of our vocabulary.
This citywide love of participating in creative 5ks translates into the passion we have for this particular tour. 3.1 miles isn’t always enough to sightsee and experience everything you’d like to on a run. This tour, however, isn’t your typical jog through the city park and 3.1 miles will completely transport you to another world. Balboa is beautiful and alive, and every one of the countless 5ks we’ve run through this park has a different story. Sometimes the park is indescribably peaceful and serene with hardly a soul in our path. The breeze blowing through the trees and softly ringing tower bells guide our meditative run through fields of bright flowers and around fountains splashing water into the tranquil blue sky. It’s the kind of day that you enjoy the perfect harmony of birds chirping and Midsummer Night’s Dream comes to mind as we’re running by Shakespeare’s Globe Theater. On other days, our run reminds us exactly where we are, in a lively and eclectic playground right in the heart of the bustling city. The park is a cultural escape filled with the stimulating sights and sounds of local artists painting, musicians playing, performers dancing, families frolicking and just about any other thing you could possibly imagine.
One thing is always consistent though, the run is awesome. No matter how the day plays out for Balboa, your guide will take you on the perfect route to heighten your understanding and enjoyment of the majestic and lush grounds that surround you. We get excited from simply people watching and being in the park, but we haven’t forgot that this place is drowning in 150 years of history and covered with iconic museums, monuments, theaters and exhibits. We always run or jog at your pace and will share our knowledge with you along the way. The beauty of the shorter run is that we’ll have more time to delve into the subjects or sections of the park that truly capture your curiosity. Check out our 8k tour description to learn more about the places we’ll see and let’s Go! Running.
This is also the tour we’d recommend if you’re considering bringing a youngster along to take in the sights from a stroller, or even run alongside us. We’re pretty used to kids leading the 5k pack here in So Cal and we love it, so the more the merrier. Especially with the zoo and museums to visit after.
