Kicking off along the riverwalk in downtown Tampa, this tour is packed full of ghost stories, haunted buildings, tons of Tampa history. And of course, you’ll get a chance to grab a few spirits along the way if you so choose! On this 7K tour through downtown and Ybor City, your guide will lead you through the streets of downtown, passing by many historical buildings in the city where the spirits still lurk. Wondering about some of the hauntings and places that you’ll see? Keep reading!
Starting at Sail Pavilion along the riverwalk, runners will have a chance to grab a cocktail along the water as the sun goes down and your guide starts telling you about the hauntings of Fort Brooke- the first settlement in Tampa from 1824. Stories of forgotten cemeteries (such as the bodies you’ll be running over) and pirate ghost ships are the perfect way to start your haunted evening in Tampa! From here, we will around the city, passing by buildings like Old City Hall, Le Meridien and The Floridan Hotels, the old Tampa Book Company and many more spooky locations that you can see in just around a 1.5-mile jaunt.
The Local Downtown Bar
We’ll make our second stop at The Local Downtown – a fun bar just around the corner from one of our downtown haunted highlights, The Tampa Theatre. Running guests can rehydrate here (highly recommended) with complimentary water and a 20% discount on all drinks. Meanwhile, your guide will reveal why The Tampa Theatre is often called the most haunted building in downtown. There’s no shortage of ghost stories at this one. This is why the theatre still operates its own in house ghost tours every Halloween season to showcase stories like that of Fink Finley, the former projector man and the usher who was bludgeoned to death right where we will be standing on our tour.
Our third stop will be just over a mile away at Maloney’s in the Channelside District of Tampa. It’s just a mile and half outside of Ybor City. It’s the true highlight of our run and by far the most haunted area in the city. Your guide will take you by locations like Perry Harvey Sr. Park, St. Paul AME Church, the Jackson House and of course, our very own downtown cemetery – Oaklawn Cemetery.
This cemetery is not only very haunted (Senor Ybor is even buried here along with gangster legend Charlie Wall), but they actually lost the cemetery plot map many years ago. So no one really knows how many bodies are in there or, more importantly, where exactly they are! With mass yellow fever burial sites and basically a jam-packed block of land, you’re sure to feel some spirits in the air as you stand alongside this beautiful but creepy location in downtown Tampa!
Into Ybor City
Last but certainly not least, your guide will take you into the true ‘cherry on top’ portion of the tour, and also your final pub stop – Ybor City! The only challenge with a ghost tour in Ybor City is narrowing down the locations. Because to be honest- the whole area is haunted, and basically, every building reports otherworldly activity! Your guide will take you by the old Florida Brewing Co. It’s believed to be haunted by a ghost who was allegedly a man killed over a beer in a bar fight – appropriate on a pub crawl, right? Then we will move into the heart of Ybor City. Before we head to our final pub, the Bad Monkey (also giving all tour guests 20% off on drinks) is a great location to grab a bite of much-needed food at this point at any of the surrounding restaurants and pizza shops.
Final Haunted Neighborhoods
Next, we will run by quite a few locations for hauntings. You’ll see the Cuban Club, King Corona on 7th Avenue, Don Vincente de Ybor, the iHorror mural and the Licata house on this final and heavily haunted portion of the run! The Licata House is home to the Licata family mass murder, supposedly the catalyst for the movie “Reefer Madness”.
As we wind down at The Bad Monkey Ybor, you will have the option to take the streetcar back to the starting point for free or runners can keep the party going in Ybor and head back when they are ready. Please bring a mask if you plan to take the streetcar – your guide will also have masks on hand for anyone who forgets. Please also bring your credit card for payment at the bars and any food/other items you may need along the way.
Water will be provided at stops, but we also encourage bringing your own hydration as well as using smart judgement with alcohol consumption along with running and utilizing Uber or a designated driver for your trip home. Waivers will be provided at the start and required by all runners to participate in this super fun and limited time only event! Hope to see you out there!
