Description
This exciting and rather technical trail running tour starts at the main Troodos square. It is a great place to stay the night or have a meal or a drink after the tour.
We will head out on the Persefoni trail. This relatively easy and gradual downhill trail goes for about 3km through a dense black pine forest and offers panoramic views of the Troodos mountain and the Amiantos area. This incredible site used to be an asbestos mining industry and was in operation for more than 80 years, until it was permanently shut down in the late 90s. Since then, the mining area has been going through reforestation and wildlife conservation with excellent results. The old school of the community has been restored and is now the geo-park’s information centre for visitors.
Treading Downhill
After a few kilometres on a dirt road, we will get on a thrilling downhill single trail. It’s a part of the Pouziaris trails, which will take us all the way to Psilo Dentro. Here you will find running water, a restaurant and fruit vendors if you need to replenish.
From here, we start on the magical Kalidonia falls trail. It’s a beautiful, lush green stream bed, one of the few that run year-round. Here, we will slow down to a hike to enjoy the sounds and sights of the mountain river bed. The endemic plants like the golden oak, Troodos sage, and wild strawberry in the dense forest add charm to the natural environment. As you follow the river upstream, you will cross it several times on well maintained wooden footbridges and rocks.
Going Uphill
This uphill hike is all worth it when you reach the waterfalls. It is one of the most visited sights and serves as a cool escape in the summer heat. You can, of course, take a dip, and you will most definitely leave with some super beautiful photos.
From the top of this trail, we get on the old paved road for a few kilometres, taking us back to Troodos square and the end of this magical tour. Have a beer and a meal and enjoy the rest of the day. Visit the information centre, the Botanical gardens nearby or even stay the night at one of the small friendly hotels.
Andy Lowe –
We were on holiday in Limassol for a week and I wanted to take in some Cypriot trails. The Troodos mountains provided to perfect backdrop, and a great selection of varied terrain, high single track with spectacular views, then a fun downhill ride followed by traversing the waterfall back up to start point. Pola was great in organising everything, and her and Viktor provided great running buddies. Such a great way to see another part of beautiful Cyprus – thanks again and hopefully see you again soon.
