Description
If you like running you probably love other sports too. The two most popular sports in Italy are football and cycling. In Verona, you can practice one and get to know the “sacred place” of the other. So, would you like to imitate the great cycling champions? After any running proposals, you could lighten your legs with a pleasant ride on the Road Cycling World Championships route, held in Verona in 1999 and 2004.
Two World Championships in few years because UCI – Union Cycliste Internationale was enchanted by the beauty of the route: TV aerial shots showed the colorful cyclists parading among the monuments, along the bends of the river, up and down the green hills around the city.
We’ll move a bit away from the center (but with a maximum difference in altitude of 250 meters) to enjoy the view, before quickly descending towards the city.
A route of about 16 kilometers (repeated by the champions 16 times…) but that we’ll do only once. However, we’ll expand our tour, leaving the cyclists’ route to reach the stadium, one of the 8 largest sports facilities in Italy, although Verona has just over a quarter of a million inhabitants. An impressive building that was one of the World Cup football fields in 1990 and today hosts the most important Italian championship matches.
After cycling around the stadium we’ll return to the World Cycling Championships route to finish our ride as the cyclists did, pedaling by the avenue that triumphantly emerges through the medieval walls in the largest square of the city, where the Arena is.
