The perfect combination of city, forest and finishing with a spectacular panoramic city view from the top of Drachenberg (Dragon Hill)! The view from here takes in the whole forest and city combined! For most tours to this great city, guests are normally taken to East Berlin and see the usual historic sights involving Communism or World War 2. And whilst East Berlin is definitely a must see, I believe West Berlin has just as much to offer and is a real hidden gem for those willing to discover it! With its unique history, beautiful architecture, cute neighborhoods and the unbelievably scenic Grunewald Forest, West Berlin has it all!
We start in the Zoo area in the heart of West Berlin. The Kaiser Wilhelm memorial church dominates the center of this once war ravaged city. We will learn why it was really built and how today it is a memorial to the follies of war. Running down the main Boulevard Kurfurstendamm or ‘Kudamm’ for short, we will learn how this unique area was once the center of the Golden 1920’s. During this period, many artists, world war 1 veterans, ladies of the night, wealthy folk and a thriving LGBT community called this place home. Turning onto elegant Savignyplatz square, we will learn about some of the characters that lived here and how their lives changed from 1933 onwards. On the run we pass through some very cute neighborhoods or Kiez as Berliners call them. In Lietzensee Kiez we could be forgiven for thinking we were in Paris as we pass by Berlins answer to the Eiffel Tower – The FunkTurm!
We finally reach Grunewald forest for 6km of really scenic trail run through Berlins green lung. We pass first through a quaint forest community who live on the forests edge and one could be forgiven for thinking that we are no longer in Berlin! Here we will discover garden homes (national past-time of many Germans). Within the forest we run through a giant sand pit and discover why this oddity of nature is here deep within the forests bowels. Moving on we discover a small hidden nudist beach (a real eye opener especially in Summer!!) and an abandoned former US spy station on top of Teufelsberg (Devil’s hill). We finish with some slightly hilly trail to Drachenberg (Dragons hill) and witness what I believe is the best panoramic view of Berlin! All the famous landmarks can be seen from here including Fernsehturm (TV Tower), Funkturm and Berliner Dom (Berlin cathedral). We take a short train ride back to the city center which is included in the price.
