Sydney is a city made for running. With great weather year round and amazing coastal paths and beaches, it is a city that should be on every runner’s list. The list below details some of the best running races in Sydney, from the marathon to charity fun runs.
Sydney Main Running Races
Date: 15 September 2019
A legacy of the 2000 Sydney Olympics, the Sydney Marathon started in 2001 to promote health and fitness. Starting in Bradfield Park and finishing at the Opera House, it follows a stunning route, crossing the Sydney Harbour Bridge and many famous landmarks. It is an IAAF Gold Label Road Race. The half marathon (below), a 10km Bridge Run, and and 3.5km family run take place on the same day – known as Sydney Running Festival.

The other main race of the Running Festival, the half marathon follows a similarly beautiful route as the marathon, crossing the Harbour Bridge, following harbour views and finishing at the Opera House. If you prefer, there is also the option of a 10km run.

Half marathon through Sydney’s central business district, with views of the Harbour Bridge, Opera House, Botanical Gardens, the Rocks, Pyrmont Peninsula and Hyde Park. It is Australia’s largest half marathon. There is an option for running it as part of a relay. It also has a strong focus on fundraising – the perfect race to choose if you want to help out a good cause.

Run the 1504 stairs of the Sydney Tower Eye and raise money for Giant Steps, a charity supporting education for children and young adults with autism. The best thing about it? When you catch your breath, you’ll have the most spectacular views of the city, from a height of 309m.

City 2 Surf is a hugely popular Sydney running race, attracting over 80,000 entrants. It is a 14km race and described as the “world’s largest fun run”. Expect crazy costumes and a party atmosphere with live music. Check out the race’s website for free training days.

The Mother’s Day Classic is an annual fun run to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research. Courses include a 4km walk and run, 7km walk and 8km run. There will be plenty of entertainment at the finish line, making it a fun event for all.
