Runner on the ground - NICHOLAS

Our start point is at the mouth. When we think of Hamburg, we think of churches, bridges, the rivers, and the parks. Wherever you go, you will find a little of everything; and that is the great thing about living in the Free and Hanseatic City. We will see the Town Hall and Square and lead out to find the St. Nikolai Memorial church.

Rounding the chin and running just as its old name dictates, we take East-West-Street. Now Willy-Brandt/Ludwig-Erhard-Strasse, who meet at Rödingsmarkt and take us all the way to The Millerntor, passing “The Landmark” church of St. Michaelis. The beacon of Hamburg, Der Michel as it is affectionately known, is the most beloved of the five main churches. For a long time, it was the tallest building in Hamburg and the first the sailors would see when arriving into port. Alas, he was the most repeatedly damaged, being destroyed twice and later decimated in WWII. Talk about cementing your way into the hearts of the locals.

Be on the lookout for the Bismarck statue as we approach this corner of the most well-known quarter, St. Pauli, where many Hamburg stars meet. The Reeperbahn; The Millerntor Stadium, home of St. Pauli FC; the rampart gardens; and (depending on the time of year) the Hamburger DOM. Originally the site of a hospital, the “Holy Ghost Field” hosts a winter and summer fair, where you can later enjoy the essential tastes of Hamburg, with a couple of thrill rides in between.

After our scheduled stop, we’ll continue North along the old ramparts, rounding the dome for the Alster lakes. Enjoy the eclectic abundance of architecture, from the Hamburg Bunker to the Justice Forum and soon the old craft houses and the Laeiszhalle music hall. Our way now completes the back & top of the head.

With our eyes now we see the Inner Alster, dammed in the 12th century and home of the world’s most spoiled Swans. You may have a chance to spot them as we jog around two sides of this enclosed part of the water, in sight of famous hotels and shopping malls. The history and the future of Hamburg come together as we take our last turn on the nose.

Join us on this short tour and experience the city, getting a good shake-out too!
