Dubrovnik is a small town that developed an intricate and efficient maritime, diplomatic and merchant tradition during the middle ages, which turned it into a significant trade and political force in the Mediterranean. With the land and islands surrounding it, it formed a small, but independent and powerful Republic that rose to become Venice’s greatest rival on the Adriatic sea. Wisely keeping a well-woven truce with the Osman empire, the Dubrovnik republic prospered for centuries economically, culturally and otherwise, and it’s core –the Old Town with it’s city walls and forts –remains practically intact to this day.

To experience it in all of it’s beauty and grace, you really need to see it from above, best from the Srđ hill that stands tall above it, running towards it down the old stone-paved roads that have been used for centuries. The development of Dubrovnik as touristic destination started soon after WWII and continued until its peak in the early 1990s when it suddenly stopped as the city was attacked during the Croatian War of Independence. If not earlier, that was the time when literally all people in the world were introduced to Dubrovnik. Unfortunately, for the bad reason that we all hope will never happen again – it was under siege and being destroyed by bombs on daily basis.
