COLOGNE GRÜNGÜRTEL HALF MARATHON TOUR
Runner on the ground - BEN
Most visitors run Cologne along the Rhine, past the Cologne Cathedral, the Hohenzollernbrücke and the Old Town. The Grüngürtel Half Marathon takes the opposite approach: 21.1 km through the city’s Inner and Outer Green Belt, the ring of parks and forests that Cologne built in the 1920s on the exact footprint of its former city fortifications. It is the route locals actually train on: flat, shaded, largely car-free, and a genuine change of pace from a typical sightseeing run.
Starting at the Volksgarten in the Südstadt, the route heads first to the Vorgebirgspark and its wide open lawns, then into the Stadtwald, Cologne’s largest forest park, circling the Decksteiner Weiher for the longest uninterrupted, big-city-free stretch of the tour. From there we head north to the Aachener Weiher, the single most popular running spot among Cologne’s own runners, and roughly the halfway point of the loop.
The route continues through the quiet Blücherpark and past the Flora, Cologne’s historic 19th-century botanical garden, before finally turning towards the Rhine. This is where the tour delivers its one big landmark moment: a crossing at the Zoobrücke into the Rheinpark, with a clear view across the water to the Cologne Cathedral and the Old Town skyline: the same view runners get on our Altstadt-based tours, just from the quieter side of the river.
A second crossing at the Hohenzollernbrücke brings runners back to the left bank for a short, familiar stretch through the city centre before finishing back at the Volksgarten. It’s the ideal tour for guests who have already done Cologne’s postcard sights and want a longer, more athletic run that shows a different, greener side of the city and for anyone training for their own half marathon or marathon who wants scenery instead of a treadmill.
