AUSTIN CAPITOL TROT - 12K

Runner on the ground - ZABDIEL
We begin at Auditorium Shores, a lively launch point with skyline views, wide-open green space, and easy access to the trail. From here, we cross the 1st Street Bridge, soaking in views of Lady Bird Lake and the city skyline from above the water. Once we reconnect with the north shore, we head west, following the trail until we reach Shoal Beach—the gateway to one of Austin’s more unexpected gems: the Shoal Creek Trail.
This portion of the run offers a gritty contrast to the polished cityscape. The Shoal Creek Trail winds through one of the older parts of downtown, where worn-down buildings and exposed infrastructure give off a nostalgic, almost forgotten vibe. While it may not be conventionally scenic, it carries a charm all its own—especially for those curious about “Old Austin.” It’s a bold detour, but one that adds depth and personality to the route.
Roughly 2 miles in, we arrive at Pease District Park, a shady, well-maintained stretch of green that features Austin’s beloved “troll” sculptures—a quirky, photo-worthy surprise that often becomes a highlight of the run. From here, we continue north along the creek for another mile before crossing Shoal Creek itself.
We then intersect North Lamar Boulevard and begin heading south again. After a few blocks, we cross Lamar at MLK Boulevard and continue east. This segment of the route takes us through the edge of the University of Texas campus, where we get a feel for Austin’s student life and collegiate energy. Running down San Jacinto Boulevard, we pass historic buildings, shaded sidewalks, and a buzz of campus life.
Once we reach 12th Street, we veer east and arrive at one of the most iconic landmarks in Texas: the State Capitol building. The grounds here make for a perfect pause, whether for history, architecture, or simply a striking photo opportunity framed by wide streets and manicured lawns.
From the Capitol, we head straight down Congress Avenue, passing restaurants, shops, and classic Austin landmarks as we make our way back toward the lake. Once we reconnect with the trail near the Austin American-Statesman building, we’re on the home stretch—just half a mile to go.
This final segment brings us full circle along the south side of Lady Bird Lake, ending right where we began at Auditorium Shores. In just under 12 kilometers, this route showcases Austin’s layered identity—from rugged creek trails and whimsical art to college-town charm and civic pride. It’s a full-scope experience of the city’s texture, character, and rhythm—all on foot.
