DINAMO ZAGREB FOOTBALL RUNNING TOUR - 12K

Runner on the ground - ED

Lace up and pass through the vibrant world of Dinamo Zagreb, a football club woven deeply into the fabric of Zagreb’s sporting and social history. This 12km tour takes you to some of the most legendary football landmarks in Zagreb — including the brutal concrete behemoth that is the iconic Maksimir Stadium, home to countless memorable matches.

We start on Zagreb’s central Ban Jelačić square, where successful Croatian national teams have been greeted by jubilant crowds after major tournaments like the 2018 World Cup. Running through some of the downtown’s most beautiful streets, we will go right back to the founding days of both Dinamo Zagreb and its predecessor clubs to see exactly where they were established.

After that, we continue to honour the past by visiting three significant pitches from Dinamo’s history. The first is the original pitch used by the Građanski Zagreb club in 1911, behind Mimara museum. Secondly, we go to the site of Građanski’s first real stadium at Koturaška street. Although the pitch has long since disappeared, the site is important because it was also Dinamo’s first stadium when the club was founded in the aftermath of the Second World War. And thirdly, we head to Kranjčevićeva stadium in the Trešnjevka neighbourhood. Once home to Concordia Zagreb, another of Dinamo’s predecessors, Kranjčevićeva is now being renovated to host Dinamo Zagreb whilst Maksimir stadium is demolished and rebuilt.

Our main goal is to reach Maksimir but on the way, we’ll point out some of the restaurants, bars and cafes that are owned by Dinamo’s legends, in case you are feeling hungry or thirsty after our run. There will also be a chance to take some photos in front of some of the best street-art fan murals made by the club’s most passionate supporters, the Bad Blue Boys.

Arriving at Maksimir stadium, we’ll make a loop around the ground, appreciating the different phases of construction which contributed to making such an awkward and frankly incoherent venue for football. The road back to Ban Jelačić square is of course one regularly taken by Dinamo’s match-going supporters but it is also run every year by thousands of participants in the Zagreb marathon.

Whether you bleed blue for Dinamo Zagreb or are just in love with the beautiful game, this tour is a must for football enthusiasts, combining culture, history, and athleticism in one exhilarating run.
