GREEN MALAGA PEAKS – 12K

Runner on the ground - STEFAN
We’ll start our run at Plaza de la Marina, the gateway to Calle Larios—Málaga’s most famous street and one of the most iconic and expensive in all of Spain. At the end of it, we’ll arrive at Plaza de la Constitución, the city’s most central and one of its most beautiful squares. We’ll continue along Calle Granada, filled with shops and terraces, until we turn right onto what may be the most charming street in Málaga: Calle San Agustín. It’s home to the Picasso Museum, housed in a 15th-century Renaissance building, the San Agustín Convent, and offers a clear view of another stunning monument: the Cathedral of Málaga, a truly imposing structure in terms of both size and beauty. From the lovely Plaza del Obispo, we’ll get to admire it in all its splendor. From here, we’ll head north, crossing Calle Alcazabilla, home to the beautiful Roman Theatre—the main preserved remnant of Roman presence in Málaga, and where we’ll make our final stop on the way back. But first, we’ll pass through Plaza de la Merced, where we’ll find the birthplace of Pablo Picasso, one of the most famous painters in the world and the city’s most celebrated son.
Now let the real challenge begin: the ascent of Mount Victoria. We start on Calle Victoria, which initially takes us up a fairly steep slope. First, we pass through a residential area, and soon after we enter a trail that winds its way through a series of switchbacks, leading us to the peak. From there, we’ll enjoy unmatched views over the city of Málaga, with the shimmering blue sea in the background. Just for these views alone, the route and the effort are absolutely worth it—no doubt about it! After taking in the magnificent views, we’ll descend the mountain via another path through the forest. We’ll catch our breath and recover some energy, because soon we’ll be facing the second peak: Mount Gibralfaro, crowned by its famous Phoenician castle from the 10th century. The castle, visible from many points across the city, made Málaga a truly hard-to-conquer stronghold in ancient times.
Between the descent from Mount Victoria and the climb up Mount Gibralfaro, there’s a junction that connects the two hills. This is where you can choose to return to the starting point if you prefer a shorter route—totaling approximately 9 km.
But are we going for the second peak? What are we waiting for? As we make our way up Mount Gibralfaro, we’ll feel the joy of running through the forest that surrounds the castle—an absolutely stunning experience. The views of the sea and the city from here are simply breathtaking! The descent can be done via another trail through the forest or along the wall of the Alcazaba, which continues to offer us spectacular panoramic scenes. We finish our run with one last stop at the Roman Theatre mentioned earlier, where we can savor the achievement of our adventure—before returning to our starting point, Plaza de la Marina.
