PLITVICE LAKES TRAIL – 20KM
Runner on the ground - IVO
This is an ideal tour for runners who want to escape from the city and spend a day surrounded by magnificent nature before returning to Zagreb for a dinner.
Tha Park is located between Croatia’s capital and the Adriatic coast, or if you prefer in numbers, it is only 130km from Zagreb.
Plitvice Lakes, or simply Plitvice (how we locals call it) is one of the oldest national parks in Croatia, established back in 1949. With its size of almost 300 km2 it is also one of the largest national parks in Croatia. Plitvice consists of 16 gorgeous crystal blue-green coloured lakes that are all connected by cascades and waterfalls. Depending on the quantity of minerals or organisms in the water and the angle of sunlight the colours change constantly. The outstanding beauty of the park has been recognised by many, including the UNESCO who placed Plitvice on their World Heritage protection list in 1979 making the Park one of the first protected areas in the world.
The beginning of 1990s was important moment for the Park as well as for Croatian recent history, after the incident that happened on Easter 1991, kind of a day 1 in the Croatian War of Independence.
With over 1 million visitors annually, Plitvice is the most visited area in Croatia, so I highly recommend you to plan your trip in advance, avoid long ticket queues (or even miss an opportunity to buy a ticket), and enjoy your stay.
Finally, in case you decide to extend your stay in Plitvice, we will give you a few recommendations on where to stay, what to eat and what else to do.
All of this and much more you will discover on our running tours.
