SHANGHAI FORMER FRENCH CONCESSION RUNNING TOUR - 6K

Runner on the ground - SHA

This 6k route offers a rich immersion into the heart of Shanghai, where the old and new blend seamlessly, showcasing both the city’s colonial history and its vibrant modern life. As we run through the Former French Concession, we’ll weave through its charming, tree-lined streets, which still exude a quieter, romantic ambiance. Once the French-administered district for nearly a century, this area is now an eclectic mix of beautiful European-style villas, hidden lane houses, and leafy avenues that house trendy boutiques, art galleries, and cozy cafés.

We’ll start at the Wukang Building, a stunning piece of Art Deco architecture that stands as a testament to Shanghai’s rich colonial past. Known as the “Parisian Building,” it’s one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. Built in the 1920s, this grand building has witnessed many changes over the years and remains a beloved symbol of the area’s history and elegance.

From there, we’ll jog through the leafy lanes of Anfu Road, a hidden gem tucked away in the heart of the French Concession. Known for its tranquil atmosphere, Anfu Road is lined with old-fashioned Shikumen-style houses, and is a haven for hip boutiques and quaint cafés. The street’s blend of colonial charm and modern creativity makes it one of the most Instagram-worthy spots in Shanghai today, offering a glimpse into the artistic and youthful/fashion side of the city.

Next, we’ll head to Yanqing Road, to experience a slice of daily life in Shanghai’s local neighborhood. It’s relatively quiet, making it a perfect street for a leisurely walk and escaping the city’s frenzy. This is a real area for Shanghai residents to do their daily shopping and live their daily lives. You won’t find many tourists here. It’s a functioning, chaotic, and wonderfully genuine slice of local life.

Then a short jog leads to Xiangyang Park, while it might not be as vast as some of Shanghai’s famous parks, Xiangyang Park holds a unique and special place in the city’s heart. Once a recreational space for the foreign community, its charm lies in its history, its quintessential “Shanghai” atmosphere, and its role as a microcosm of local life. It’s a living portrait of local Shanghai life.

Then we will hit the Huaihai Road, Shanghai’s version of the “Champs-Élysées” or “5th Ave”. Once a bustling commercial artery during the early 20th century, Huaihai Road still maintains its presence with elegant European-style buildings that house luxury shops and high-end restaurants. It’s a nod to the city’s cosmopolitan past and present, where international influences shaped its commercial and cultural development. Running along this wide boulevard, we’ll be surrounded by some of the city’s most notable historical architecture, as well as the most trendy international and local brands, while feeling the pulse of modern Shanghai.

Finally, we’ll head back and finish our route back at the Wukang Building. This route is not just a physical journey but a walk through time, a chance to explore the layers of Shanghai’s past and present while taking in its historic charm, urban energy, and modern-day vibrancy. The highlight of this route is that we will run under tree-lined streets the entire way. This is the only place in Shanghai where you can enjoy such a privilege. Come join me to enjoy a moment of quiet contemplation amidst the city’s hustle!
