SUN, SEE BREEZE AND SARDINE SKEWERS – 21K

Are you someone who loves sunshine, light, sea breeze, and the ocean? Looking for a mostly flat route that allows you to keep a steady pace while fully enjoying the scenery? Imagine feeling the sun’s rays, the sea breeze gently brushing your skin, breathing in the fresh air, and catching that unmistakable scent of the ocean with every step you take… Maybe even stopping for a quick workout on one of the outdoor fitness machines along the way, if you feel like it. And what if, at the same time, someone told you where to find the best espetos de sardina—the most typical dish in Málaga? Sounds amazing, right? Well, all of that and much more awaits you on our half marathon route.

Runner on the ground - STEFAN

We’ll begin our run at Plaza de la Marina, right in the heart of Málaga. From there, we’ll head straight to the most modern part of the city: Muelle 1 and Muelle 2, the waterfront promenades next to the port, full of shops and restaurants. Along the way, we’ll also pass the now-iconic colorful glass cube of the Centre Pompidou—the only Spanish branch of the famous Paris museum. On the return leg of our run, this will be our final stop, where we’ll reflect on everything we’ve experienced together.

Let’s keep going… At the end of the piers, we’ll see La Farola, a lighthouse built in 1817 and a true emblem of the city. Locals feel a special affection for it, because of what it represents for Málaga. Leaving the piers behind, we enter the Paseo Marítimo Ciudad de Melilla, which takes us to the famous Baños del Carmen, built in 1920. This charming spot used to be the leisure destination of choice for the city’s upper class. In this stretch, we’ll also pass several small outdoor “gyms”—just in case running 21 km wouldn’t be quite enough.

After we pass Baños del Carmen, we head straight into one of Málaga’s most traditional and character-filled neighborhoods: Pedregalejo, known for its old fishermen’s houses and its lively bars and terraces—perfect places to enjoy Málaga’s signature dish: the famous espeto de sardinas (sardines grilled on skewers). By the way, at night, this neighborhood (Pedregalejo) also becomes the place to see and be seen. But let’s get back to our route: After leaving the Pedregalejo neighborhood behind, we continue along the seaside promenade through the area of El Palo, where, at the far end, we’ll find El Tintero, perhaps the most famous chiringuito (beach bar) in Málaga. Here, waiters auction off the dishes by shouting—an unforgettable spectacle for both locals and visitors alike.

From this point on, we enter what is arguably the most scenic part of the route. What was a promenade up until now becomes a trail running a few meters above sea level, offering even more breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea. We’ll pass by the Peñón del Cuervo, a favorite spot for locals to barbecue right by the sea. It’s nestled beside a small cove whose beauty is hard to match along the Málaga coastline. We continue our route toward the nearest village, La Cala del Moral, where—depending on our starting time—we might be lucky enough to witness a stunning sunrise! If not, we’ll at least catch it already well underway—it won’t escape us.

Before beginning our return journey along the same path, we’ll make sure to hydrate at one of the water stations located along the route, and then enjoy everything we’ve seen all over again—this time, even more!
