WASHINGTON D.C. NATIONAL MONUMENTS, HISTORIC NEGHBORHOODS AND THE ZOO - 22K

Runner on the ground - ANDREW
Explore the breathtaking sites of the nation’s capital, a city that shines in all four seasons! Join me on this half marathon tour starting at the National Mall. Flanked by museums and monuments, the Mall hosts our nation’s pivotal marches, presidential inaugurations, annual festivals and nightly softball and soccer (futbol) games. We’ll stop early to snap precious pictures by our city’s tallest structure, the Washington Monument. Continuing on the Mall, we’ll visit the World War II Memorial, run along the reflecting pool heading towards to the Tidal Basin. Our run will take us around this still body of water, and the three tranquilly positioned memorials of Thomas Jefferson, FDR and Martin Luther King.
Joining back with Mall, we’ll visit the iconic, neoclassical Lincoln Memorial. Climbing the step to Lincoln reveals the 19 foot tall marble carving of the 16th president, with the stunning view of the city all meeting his gaze.
Crossing over to the Potomac River, we’ll run along the adjacent trail with views of Roosevelt Island to the west and the Kennedy Center, renown theatre for the performing arts, to the east. Traveling along the waterfront we will enter Georgetown, a landmark neighborhood whose founding predates that of the District of Columbia. From here, we’ll run through Glover Park, our first of two forested trails treasured by locals. Next stop is the Washington National Cathedral, a striking gothic building towering over the neighborhood of Cathedral Heights; the cathedral has hosted the funerals of many 20th century presidents.
Running east, we’ll visit the Smithsonian National Zoo. Lions, tigers and bears, oh my! specifically panda bears, the city’s unofficial mascot. The pandas at our Zoo have been a beloved animal for over 50 years, featured in the zoo, the gift shop and in city street art. The National Zoo is nestled against the city’s largest park, Rock Creek Park, an urban forest that shades the babbling Rock Creek, a tributary of the Potomac River. We’ll follow the creek south exiting towards Duport Cirle, another historic neighborhood, home to the embassies of the world.
Running along Embassy Row, we will finish our tour at Lafayette Park, a place of respite just above the White House, our nation’s most protected residence.
