ZAGREB WITCHES SPOOKY RUNNING TOUR - 7K

Runner on the ground - ED

Tie you laces, polish your cauldron, and utter an incantation as we run through the most mythical sites in Zagreb’s legendary history of witchcraft. Starting at the mythical Manduševac fountain, a place where covens were once rumoured to gather, this 7km tour plunges you into the city’s haunted folklore.

We visit historic narrow streets like Tkalčićeva, Skalinska and Opatovina, where many of the so-called witches lived their day-to-day lives, stopping off at the statue of Marija Jurić Zagorka, Croatia’s pioneering female author whose spellbinding witch-themed novels immortalize the scandalous atmosphere of paranoid hysteria in Zagreb’s eerie past.

The route then takes you to the Upper Town, the site of institutional power in Habsburg Croatia. We stop on Ćirilometodska street where the notorious trials of suspected witches took place and the condemned were banished to a grim dungeon to await their fate. Feel the dread as we follow the path that the wagon took as it carried the doomed towards the stake on the edge of Tuškanac forest.

Fortunately, many witches were able to escape detection, so we go in search of them, venturing deeper into this mysterious woodland where honest townsfolk were afraid to go, fearing that that would bump into a coven plotting in a clearing under moonlight. Our final stop is the evocative Jurjevsko cemetery. Now hidden, wild and overgrown, many of the unfortunate witches were laid to rest here, beyond the old perimeters of the city.

This running tour offers an unforgettable mix of real history, fantastic myth, and spine-tingling tales that will transform how you see Zagreb, especially after dark.
