Runner on the ground - LENA AND MICHAEL

10 years of running

Join a running holiday that combines running in beautiful nature, eating and tasting local Danish gastronomy and finishes off with a lunch at Noma. The World’s Best Restaurant.

This running holiday is a collaboration between us in Go! Running Tours and our good friends at Gastrominoen which is a travel organiser specialised in gastro-bike holidays Denmark.

Authenticity is set to max. For the first three days runners will run through North Sealand which will be a combination of running through forests and fields as well as along the Danish coast. During the day we break up the running by stopping at local food producers, vineyards and breweries for tasting sessions. Accommodation will vary from a small local beach hotel to retro Danish MKP campervans and glamping tents to a luxury hotel when back in Copenhagen.

We will run between 20-25 km a day (don’t panic this will be during the course of a day) The terrain will be a combination of gravel roads, regular roads and forest tracks, where regular running shoes will suffice. In case you would like to enjoy this with a partner/friend who does not run, it’s possible to join by bike or if the daily distance is too long, its possible to do a run/bike split.

ITINERARY

Our itineraries are flexible. We have so many places to visit! Below is a guide of our daily activities and itinerary.
Your guides will be Lars and Lena.
Lars is the founder of Gastrominoen (bike and food holidays) and has 20+ years experience in the food and experience space, and a couple of marathons under his belt. Lena is the founder of Go! Running Tours and does running tours and holidays for a living. ……and they are also long-time friends, food lovers and running buddies.

Day 1 (Sept 21)

We depart Copenhagen by train heading north and as we arrive we will run the first 4 km before we have our first tasting at the micro brewery “Det våde Får” (The Wet Sheep). The next 11 kilometers are through the Danish countryside and our only stop on this stretch is to Ørby Vineyard where we will have a tour and a tasting. You may think “what – Danish wine??” and rightfully so. We are not exactly known to be the urgundy of the North, but we do grow wine and it’s good (in all humility), so expect to be surprised. Lunch will be at a local organic farm, and if it’s nice weather we will eat outside with a view to the vegetable garden and sheep. After lunch there will be some rest time at the farm, before we run the last 10 km through the National Park Tisvilde Hegn with amazing views of the sea. We finish off the day at a local beach hotel where we will stay the night and enjoy their dish of the day for dinner.

Day 2 (Sept 22)

We start the second day by running the first 10 km through the Danish countryside where we half way make a stop at a micro-dairy farm and also at one of Denmark’s oldest eco-villages. A place where community and sustainability is at the very forefront. We will have a look around the eco-village until we continue to run toward Hundested. On the way we will pass the lighthouse and also the house of Knud Rasmussen (Greenlandic/Danish Polar Explorer). At Hundested we will enjoy typical Danish “Smørrebrød” (open-faced sandwiches) and there will after lunch be time to explore the small city and let the food settle. We then continue our run along the sea and through the countryside before we reach our stop for the night, the Byaasgaard campsite. Here we will stay in a mix of MKP campers (small Danish retro campers – you’ll be hip with the hippest) and glamping tents. The campsite is located right along the water, so it is a great place for evening walks and a chance for a quiet escape. Dinner we will be cooking together, from local produce.

Day 3 (Sept 23)

We start the day with a 7 km stretch to Ågabet, which is an old fishing community and a nature oasis by the lake Arresø. It’s our good friend Kasper who manages the small area (he is also the owner of Arctic Friend – so if you want to visit Greenland he is the one to speak to) and he will give us a small tour, explaining how the area was used by local fishers.

From Ågabet, we take the small boat MS Frederikke across the lake to Ramløse Havn where we will have 7 km of easy-going running until we reach the vineyard Garbolund Naturvin. Here we will have lunch as well as a tasting session, that without a doubt will set us up for the next 7 km that takes us through the Danish countryside to Thornæs Distillery (Gin, Whiskey and Snaps at the ready). At the distillery, we will have a guided tour as well as a tasting, before we run the last two kilometres to the train station, from where we will travel back to Copenhagen. Runners will stay at Manon Les Suites – a 5-star suite hotel in the city centre and its optional to join (self paid) dinner on Friday night

Day 4 (Sept 24)

Saturday is an easy day. In the morning, Lena will guide runners on an 8-10 km running tour of Copenhagen, where you’ll experience the main sights and hidden gems of the Danish capital all while Lena shares the ins and outs of Danish history and culture.

The tour will last approximately 1½ hours and then there is time to have breakfast and relaxation before lunch at the number one restaurant in the world, Noma. We will be having the full tasting menu (it is vegetable season – so park your inner carnivore for the day) with a choice of wine or juice menu.

Then we give high fives as that marks the finish of our running holiday.

Final thoughts/disclaimer:
This holiday is a 100% “con amour” project for us (Lars and Lena). Its combining all the good things in life – running, nature, food, and sustainability. Its also put together with an easy-going approach that we would apply as if we made this holiday just for us. So for example – does it make sense to visit a vineyard or brewery (with tasting sessions) at 10 am in the morning. Not really – but it’s too cool an opportunity to miss and it will be fun. Does it make sense to have Smørrebrød for lunch when there is still 10 km to go? Probably not -but we would personally always make the non-sensible choice because nothing beats good Smørrebrød! Would it be nicer to stay in a luxury camper van, yes, but not as fun and amazing to stay in retro, Danish design campervans.

So,  view the running holiday as the ultimate holiday for two friends, who thought it would be amazing to share it with other people who share the same passion for running, fun and food. Voila!
