Runner on the ground - GUILLAUME

Discover Hamburg on an active and engaging 5 km running tour through the heart of the city. This route connects many of Hamburg’s most famous landmarks while revealing the stories that shaped one of Europe’s great port cities.

The tour begins near the magnificent Hamburg Rathaus, the political center of the city and one of its most impressive buildings. From here, runners move through the historic core of Hamburg, where elegant architecture and waterfront views set the tone for the journey. Along the way, the route passes the Alster lakes, whose calm waters and green surroundings make Hamburg one of Germany’s most pleasant cities for running.

A powerful stop on the tour is the St. Nikolai Memorial, a striking reminder of the city’s past. Once the tallest building in the world during the nineteenth century, the church tower now stands as a monument to the destruction of World War II and the resilience of Hamburg. From there, the route continues toward the historic Speicherstadt, the famous red-brick warehouse district built in the late nineteenth century for global trade. Today this UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of Hamburg’s most iconic areas, filled with canals, bridges, and historic architecture that reflects the city’s maritime heritage.

Running toward the Elbe River, guests experience the lively atmosphere of the harbor at Landungsbrücken and Baumwall, where ferries, ships, and harbor tours bring the port to life. Here stands the spectacular Elbphilharmonie, Hamburg’s modern landmark and one of the world’s most celebrated concert halls, rising above a former warehouse with its striking glass structure.

The tour then explores the vibrant district of St. Pauli, known internationally for its nightlife, music culture, and the legendary Reeperbahn. Along the way, runners see the massive Flak Tower from World War II and the Millerntor Stadium of FC St. Pauli.

In just a few kilometers, this run reveals the many faces of Hamburg: political power, maritime trade, wartime memory, music, nightlife, and modern architecture. Perfect for visitors who want to combine sightseeing with exercise, this tour offers a relaxed pace, fascinating stories, and an unforgettable way to experience Hamburg, one stride at a time.
