LONDON WATERWAYS ADVENTURE – 21K

London’s grandeur as a commercial metropolis is greatly due to its waterways, which allowed the maritime trading of goods and transport for people.

This route follows the Regent’s Canal till it reaches the Thames River. Along the way, I will point out places of important urban and historic relevance, such as the beautiful regeneration of Coal Drops Yards by St Pancras Lock, Battlebridge Basin, the Islington Canal Tunnel and the City Road Basin.

As you run alongside the canal, you’ll notice how the peacefulness of the canal life contrasts with the vibrant energy of the city. Although London is widely known for its bustling streets, classical architecture, and modern skyscrapers, the city has many more facets to flaunt. This tour offers a unique glimpse into a different side of the city, where you will encounter the canal-side communities and the distinctive lifestyle of life aboard the boats. The tranquil paths, shaded by trees and lined with narrowboats, give a sense of calm amid London’s fast pace. We will share the path with other morning runners, locals walking their dogs or friends catching up for a morning coffee.

As we reach the Thames, we will encounter remnants of London’s rich maritime and dockyard history, including old warehouses, dock basins, and two ship replicas: the Sea Lark and Three Sisters. Much of this area, once used as docks, has been transformed into beautiful residential neighborhoods where the architecture and thoughtfully designed landscapes are seamlessly integrated with the historic waterways that remain.

The tour will continue along the northern side of the Thames where we will be welcomed back into the cityscape by the imposing view of Tower Bridge, London’s iconic landmark and engineering marvel. Running along the northern banks of the river you will see how the city brings together all kinds of architectural styles: from the medieval Tower of London, the contemporary skyscrapers towering in the city’s heart and the classical villas lining along Embankment. This architectural mix serves as a reminder of the city’s rich history and its enduring role as a financial metropolis.

The route will conclude in the heart of the modern city, where the tour started.
