London’s built landscape is a legacy of its rich and storied history. As such, the city is a jigsaw puzzle of Roman, Medieval, Tudor, Victorian, Gothic, Modernist and Contemporary architecture, just to name a few. Each building embodies a distinct chapter in the city’s development, capturing both its past and present.

This architectural tour begins in the vibrant heart of Covent Garden, at its historic central square. Dominating the scene is the iconic Covent Garden Market, a neoclassical structure from the 19th century. As early-bird runners, we will have the privilege to enjoy this place in its most serene moment, because it will be bustling again with commerce, tourists and live music in a few hours. This plaza has been a bustling hub of commerce since the 17th century when it became London’s first modern square.

Continuing our journey through history, we’ll feast our eyes on the Victorian Gothic Revival grandeur of the Royal Courts of Justice, followed by Sir Christopher Wren’s masterpiece: St. Paul’s Cathedral.

London’s historic centre is an exemplary display of the city’s architectural mix. As we reach the stunning views of Tower Bridge and London Tower we will also appreciate the skyline of skyscrapers composed of the Shard, Cheesegrater, Walkie Talkie and Gherkin, among others.

Tucked away between the bustling streets, the city conceals architectural treasures frozen in time. I’ll keep these hidden gems a secret, reserved for the curious runners eager to join this tour!

Another milestone of the tour is the Barbican Centre, a must-see for brutalist architecture lovers. This massive residential complex and cultural centre was the urban and architectural solution to develop a site devastated during World War II. Its rough and exposed concrete, geometric forms, functionality (or lack of ornamentation) and massive structural elements make it an emblematic building of the modernist movement.

The route will lead us through Smithfield Market, offering a striking contrast to our previous stop. Despite its functional purpose as a livestock market for over 800 years, the building showcases the rich ornamentation characteristic of the Victorian era.

Last, but not least, the tour’s last landmark is St Pancras, considered as one of the wonders of Victorian engineering. Along with the former Midland Grand Hotel, it is a masterpiece of Victorian Gothic architecture and one of the most elegant stations in the World.
