THE LONG REYKJAVIK RUN - 17K

Runner on the ground - FRAN
We will start once again at the shimmering glass façade of Harpa Concert Hall, where the morning sun dances across the harbor. The city is still quiet, and the only sound is our footsteps as our head west along the Sæbraut coastal path.
We pass the Sun Voyager, its steel frame catching the light like a Viking ship ready to sail. But today, our journey is on land — and it’s just beginning.
We continue along the coast, past the old harbor and into the Grandi district, where warehouses have become art galleries and cafés. The salty sea air energizes us as we loop around the peninsula, catching views of Viðey Island in the distance.
Turning inland, we will re-enter the city through Downtown Reykjavík, weaving through Austurvöllur Square and climbing the colorful Skólavörðustígur to the towering Hallgrímskirkja. We pause briefly, taking in the view from the top of the hill.
From here, we head south through quiet neighborhoods, the city slowly giving way to trees. We enter the Öskjuhlíð forest, where the trail winds upward to Perlan, perched like a crown above the city. You circle the dome, the forest whispering around you.
But we’re not done yet.
We descend into the lush Fossvogsdalur Valley, where the path follows a gentle stream. The world feels far away here — just us, the birds, and the rhythm of our breath.
Instead of turning back, we continue south along the Fossvogur coastline, reaching the edge of Nauthólsvík Geothermal Beach. The golden sand and steaming hot tubs are tempting, but we press on, looping around the bay.
We climb back toward the city through Hlíðar, then descend once more to the tranquil waters of Tjörnin Pond. The swans glide beside us as we circle the water, the city now fully awake.
Our final stretch takes you past Reykjavík City Hall, through the old harbor, and back to where it all began — Harpa. Seventeen kilometers of Reykjavík’s soul, seen through our own two feet.
