Runner on the ground - SIDHARTA

Get ready to travel through time in the center of Rio de Janeiro. On a journey through the narrow streets and boulevards of the marvelous city, you will come into contact not only with the glamorous past of colonial Brazil, but also with the tragic history preserved in some of the city’s buildings. Running through the port area, you’ll experience the contrast between old and new, glimpsing possible futures at every turn.

Our tour will start near the ferry station that connects Rio de Janeiro to the city of Niterói. From this point, entering a military control zone, we will see a palace built on Fiscal Island. Built in the Gothic style by Dom Pedro II in the 19th century, the castle, inspired by French medieval architecture, was the scene in 1889 of one of the last celebrations of the monarchy.

After passing the XV de Novembro square, the oldest in Rio de Janeiro, named after the date of the proclamation of the Republic, we will run along the Olympic Boulevard to the pyre of the 2016 Olympic games. An example of kinetic art, the pyre in Rio moves with the force of the wind in the format of the sun. From the square where it is located, we will head to the Candelária Church, a jewel encrusted between skyscrapers, facing Guanabara Bay.

From the baroque Candelária, we’ll continue through the bucolic landscape of the port area to Mauá Square, where the eclectic architecture of the Rio Art Museum (MAR) meets the futuristic construction of the Museum of Tomorrow, a place focused not on remembering the past, but on reflecting about the future.

Leaving behind the past and future housed in Praça Mauá, we’ll continue through the warehouses located on Pier Mauá, where cultural and commercial activities are based and where the Rio de Janeiro International Cruise Terminal is located. Decorating the area, we’ll pass the famous Ethnicities Mural created by Eduardo Kobra to commemorate the 2016 Olympic Games. An example of sustainable art, the mural, which is in the Guinness Book of World Records, represents the diversity of the five continents through five faces.

After passing the Rio de Janeiro Aquarium and the Yup Star, the largest giant wheel in Latin America, we head to the region known as Little Africa, where the archaeological site of Cais do Valongo is located. Built in 1811, the pier was the main port of entry for enslaved Africans to Brazil and the Americas (and the only one physically preserved on the continent).

Continuing our journey through time, we’ll head towards the Monastery of São Bento, founded in the 16th century in the heart of the city’s historic center by two Benedictine monks.

From the sacred past, we’ll return to the present at the festive and lively Arco do Teles. The place, which has become known for its restaurants and samba circles, is full of curiosities, including urban legends and ghost stories.

We’ll end our journey through time by passing one of the city’s most historically valuable buildings: the Paço Imperial (or Imperial Palace). Used as a residence for governors, viceroys and the royal family when they arrived in Brazil, it is one of the most important sites in the country’s political history and cultural heritage.

Before returning to the present, we will visit the Tiradentes Palace and the Rio Court of Justice, completing part of what is known as Rio de Janeiro’s cultural corridor.
