THE BIG WORM - CYBERPUNK THEMATIC SAO PAULO TOUR - 10K
Runner on the ground - NICHOLAS
Welcome to the ultimate example of São Paulo’s “urban glitch.” The Elevado Presidente João Goulart locally known as the Minhocão (Big Worm) is an elevated highway built in 1971 during the military dictatorship. Slicing through dense neighborhoods like Santa Cecília and Amaral Gurgel, it was designed for cars, yet successfully reclaimed by the people. This 7 km linear tour explores how pure infrastructure has been transformed into a suspended boardwalk for runners, cyclists, and street artists.
We start at the Marechal Deodoro Ramp, a brutalist entrance where you’ll immediately feel the “Brutal Proximity” of the city. As we run at window height, you are less than five meters from living rooms, witnessing the urban resilience of residents who adapted to this concrete giant. You’ll see massive visual reclamations as giant murals by artists like Kobra that fight against the “Grey City” and “Vertical Gardens” designed to filter decades of carbon monoxide.
From the Rio Branco Overlook, the layers of São Paulo reveal themselves: decaying historical centers, 1950s modernist blocks, and the distant glass towers of financial power, all while the world’s largest civilian helicopter fleet buzzes overhead. This run isn’t through a park; it’s through a system. It’s a study of inequality, technology, and survival sitting side-byside on a concrete ridge.
