SAN DIEGO BALBOA PARK – 9K

Let’s run past some of the commonly known and hidden areas around Balboa Park including the world famous San Diego Zoo, through the gardens and across two very different bridges. One of the largest urban parks in the country, there are more than 1,100 acres total in this gorgeous and historic space.

We’ll see the stunning Spanish Colonial architecture that was built for expositions and World Fairs, starting more than a century ago. While the Botanical Building won’t be open in time for early morning tours, we’ll enjoy the koa pond in front. Several museums, including the Air & Space, Automotive and Organ Pavillion and the Japanese Friendship Garden kick off this fast and flat tour.

Next, we’ll jog through the desert and the rose garden to get warmed up and then head across one large bridge to check out a second nearby suspension bridge, with the option of crossing it or just admiring it. We’ll pass the Sculpture Garden and the Old Globe, which is a recreation of Shakespeare’s original and the large lion at the entrance to the San Diego Zoo. Lots of small international houses dot the landscape along with a large artist village.

One of the most beautiful and historic places in the city won’t leave you missing the beaches, but should inspire you on how to plan for a full day or two trip later on. This short run packs in quite a few landmarks and will give you a huge list of places you’ll want to return to see, as well as a restaurant recommendation or two.
