TOUR DESCRIPTION

Details

We will start our tour in the historic Highland Square neighborhood along the Portage Path. Here the Native Americans carried their canoes to get from the Cuyahoga River which flows North to Lake Erie to the Tuscarawas River which flows South to the Ohio River! We will quickly pass a Native American statue that celebrates the Portage Path and head by historic homes and the Portage Country Club. We continue our run to Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens which is the 6th largest historic home in the country and the first historic landmark in Akron.

This impressive mansion built between 1912 and 1915 is loaded with history and features fantastic gardens throughout the grounds. As soon as we step inside the gate we are greeted by the Gate House where Alcoholics Anonymous Founders Dr. Bob Smith was introduced to Bill Wilson by Henrietta Seiberling. We continue on to the Manor house which was built in the Tutor Revival style with 8 gardens surrounding the property and great views of the Cuyahoga Valley. Once we finish with what should be the highlight of our tour we still have plenty of sights to take in as we cut over to Merriman Road and run alongside other historic homes and mansions.

We will find our way down to the home of Elias Edgerton as we take in the scenic Akron skyline and run past Dr. Bob’s grave in Mount Piece Cemetery. Our tour will be coming toward a close, running by the Tangier Restaurant where many celebrities have performed and dined. We will finish just past Mary Coyle Ice Cream Parlor as we run past the restaurant and entertainment venues of Highland Square including the Highland Theatre that my Grandpa mentions frequently in his letters home during World War II.

  • DO YOU CANCEL IF IT RAINS?
No we do not cancel our tours if it rains, storm etc. It is very rare that conditions are so bad, that we have to cancel, so if you are in doubt - expect to run.

    WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?
In Akron we have mild to cool temperatures in spring & fall, cold winters, and warm summers. It is always a good idea to check the weather conditions before travelling to Akron, so that you know what temperatures to expect.

During the colder months we always recommend people wear long sleeves and in winter layers of clothes and a hat and gloves, etc. as we have short stops along the run, in order to take photos and for the guide to talk about the attractions. In summer you can easily just wear a t-shirt and a pair of shorts/tights.

IS THERE WATER ON THE TOUR?
It is recommended that you bring your own water to the run and there are a few public water fountains along some of the tour routes, so if you are in need of a sip of water, simply ask the guide to point out a drinking spot.

HOW FAST DO YOU RUN ON THE TOURS, DO I HAVE TO BE AN ELITE RUNNER TO PARTICIPATE?
The running pace is set on our private tours by you. During our group tour we run a pace of about 6:00 min/km or 9:30 to 10:30 per mile.

IS IT POSSIBLE TO STORE BAGS AND CLOTHES AT THE PLACE WE START?
Your tour guide could store a small bag in their car. Please request upfront of the tour.

IS IT POSSIBLE TO TAKE PICTURES ALONG THE WAY?
Yes, you can bring your camera and snap away. The running guide will also take pictures along the route, and if there is a certain place you would like your picture taken, then simply ask your guide. The pictures will be sent to you after the tour by email.

DO YOU HAVE A HOTEL PICK-UP SERVICE?
We offer for our private tours an optional hotel pick-up service. The hotel or apartment building should be on or close to the tour route.

Please let us know your complete hotel or apartment address during the tour reservation process and we will check if we can meet you at your hotel/apartment or at the standard meeting point.

tip  BOOKING TIP:
BOOK EARLY - GIVE US SOME TIME
We recommend to book your running tour minimum 2-3 days before your preferred tour date. Especially during the different high seasons, when many guests like to join our runs.
That will give the guide/city manager enough time to arrange together with you the last tour details like the meeting point, start time and to organize a personal tour guide for your unique and fun running experience.
